Just because he's really religious doesn't mean he doesn't want to talk to you but like you said he's your friend. And just because he is your friend it doesn't mean you guys always have to be together and always talking. I ignore my friends sometimes because I just want to be left alone. Maybe yesterday you cracked a joke and it actually offended him but he just laughed to keep it casual. The best thing to do is just tap him on the shoulder and ask him if he is ok. Maybe he is upset and wants to be left alone. You go and talk to him. He shouldn't have be the one to make the first move all the time. Go ahead and give it a shot and if it doesn't work, give him some time.
